Dr. Rhesa Houston

Managing Veterinarian


Dr. Rhesa Houston has a special interest in public health with a specific focus on the health and wellness benefits of the human-animal bond which led her to create Assistance Animal Consulting. Devoted to young people, Rhesa spends much of her time motivating young audiences through her educational workshops in veterinary medicine; physiological, psychological and emotional health and wellness in relation to the human-animal bond; team building and leadership development in sports and athletics; and youth education and leadership development.


Rhesa earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Tuskegee University and her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Piedmont College. She lives in Birmingham with her three adopted children, Roxie, Chihuahua mix; Aila, domestic shorthair cat; and Tootsie domestic shorthair cat.

Dr. Hugh Washington

Associate Veterinarian ​​​​​​​

​​​​​​​Dr. Hugh Washington is a native of Decatur and graduated from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine before moving to Birmingham. He worked as a relief veterinarian in Birmingham and Homewood before joining Standifer's Animal Clinic in 2017. Dr. Washington and his wife Patti enjoy BBQ, working in their garden and spending time with their Australian Shepherd, Kylie.

Dr. Desiree Cooley

Veterinarian, Veterinary Acupuncturist

Dr. Desiree Cooley joined the Standifer’s Animal Clinic veterinary team in 2019. A native of upstate South Carolina, Dr. Cooley graduated from Clemson University and Mississippi State College of Veterinary Medicine before moving to Birmingham.

With an interest in adjunctive holistic therapies as a complement to traditional veterinary medicine, Dr. Cooley attended the Chi Institute while in veterinary school to attain an animal acupuncture certification and is a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist (CVA). She also utilizes herbal and food recommendations to better help patients in a holistic manner in addition to traditional medical therapies. Beyond caring for dogs and cats, Dr. Cooley welcomes pocket pets and some exotic pets as patients including lizards, turtles, gerbils, hamsters, hedgehogs, guinea pigs, ferrets and rabbits.

​​​​​​​Outside the veterinary hospital, she enjoys hiking, sports, and spending time with her babies – a dog, Macho Latte, and two cats – Mable and Evoli. She is excited to be a part of a hospital that has seen generations of families and become a part of the team to be the partner in their pet’s health.

Dr. Wayne A. Standifer

Retired

Dr. Wayne Standifer is a 1982 graduate of the Auburn School of Veterinary Medicine where his father, the late, Dr. William Standifer also graduated in 1951 and founded Standifer's Animal Clinic in 1957. Dr. Standifer retired in 2019.
